Corporate Social Responsibility

Conducting business in a socially responsible manner is an important element of NTR's organisational culture. Recognising that the Group and its people draw significant support from, and are an integral part of, the communities in which we operate, the Group is committed to ensuring that such support is reciprocated through an actively managed program of social and community support activities. NTR is in the process of establishing the NTR Foundation, an independent foundation that will address the challenges posed by the issues of Climate Change, Resource Sustainability and Security of Energy Supply though the provision of targeted financial and expert support to projects, research and Non Governmental Organisations.

NTR supports a number of external organisations who we believe are making important contributions to our wider community. These include Social Entrepreneurs Ireland and Lifetime Labs.

    Lifetime Lab

Lifetime Lab, located in the old Victorian waterworks in Cork City, Ireland, provides a venue for educating school children about environmental issues, conservation of energy and materials, as well as the importance of educating people of all ages about how to protect our environment, in particular our use of energy and water and our attitudes to waste. NTR has been involved in the Lifetime Lab since its inception and is its main corporate sponsor.

The centre offers itself as a working example of energy conservation, with geothermal under-floor heating, a hydro-powered electricity supply to provide green electricity from the nearby River Lee, solar panels running the outdoor lighting and a windmill installed to generate electricity to pump water as a demo model. 80% of the required energy is provided from renewable resources available on site. To date, over 50,000 have visited Lifetime Lab through a combination of classroom workshops, school tours, conference and event and off street walk in.

In April 2008, the Lifetime Lab was awarded the Irish Head of Government, Taoiseach’s, Public Service Excellence Award. Other notable awards include Innovating Government Award, October 2008; Chambers Ireland President Award, September 2008; Green Award, December 2008 and European Shining Example Award, June 2007.
