Greenstar Launches 'All-In-One' Recycling

Greenstar Recycling said Wednesday it had opened the first “single-stream” recycling facility in Houston.

Single stream allows participants to combine all recyclables into one bin to increase convenience for households and businesses. Greenstar says it invested $7 million in upgrading its existing facility on Brittmoore Road in Northwest Houston to single-stream recycling.

Matt Delnick, Greenstar chief executive, says single stream has helped cities across Texas increase recycling rates, citing a 300 percent increase in Dallas, 200 percent in San Antonio and 75 percent in Austin.

Single stream is available for businesses, residential subdivisions and municipalities.

The upgrades to a single stream facility included technology to automate the sorting process to cleanly separate mixed materials. The 90,000 square foot facility has the capacity to process 15,000 tons of material each month.

Greenstar handles an estimated 2 million tons of recyclables per year through its 14 processing facilities.
